Day 3 of my first in-person workshops since January 2020, so excited!
One of the themes of yesterday: how do we find the right balance between being goal-oriented and celebrating achievements?

Climbing a mountain and looking at the peak isn’t as motivating as looking back and seeing how far you have come!

Yes, we need to have goals but it's even more important to acknowledge and celebrate how far you have come!

What would you do if you found out that your direct report earned £30K more than you (unjustified, ie they are not an alien genius landed from Mars to save planet earth)?

It's super common for women mid-career and up to be well underpaid vs male colleagues. In addition, there are extreme cases, like the above, which is a real one - not hypothetical.

Whilst there is the obvious issue of imbalance here, what worries me even more is the loss of self-esteem this causes.

So my preferred approach is to tackle self-esteem first, to make people, in this case women, stronger so that they will no longer be the victims of broken systems.

Are you held back by fear of failing?

I've been astounded by how big Procrastination is for people.

And although often it is labelled as laziness, there is much more behind it.

We are generally so busy with the urgent stuff, that we don’t have the mental space to tackle the big & important and we push it back.

We are so afraid of making mistakes, of failing, that we get paralised. We just stay where we are pondering in worry. When we worry we tend to feel sad and powerless.

When we seek to learn and progress from all experiences, including mistakes and failures, we feel happy and progress quicker because we don’t get stuck in worry.

It’s a simple mindset shift, but not necessarily easy - because we have been conditioned to avoid failure.

—> Intentionally choose environments (ie organisations) that promote test & learn (but really!)

—> Work on your mental fitness every day to shift your own mindset

It takes 6 weeks to see incredible mindset shifts with only 12 minutes a day of mental gym exercises.

Then, the world is your oyster! (that said, don't book any travel abroad yet ;)

Sabotaging tendencies work just like a virus. They multiply in the body because the body thinks they are ‘friends’.

Let me give you a practical example.
How many of you have claimed to be a perfectionist, viewing it (deep down perhaps) as a positive trait?

For some of the others, such as “victim”, we don’t boast so openly about it but they work in the same way at subconscious level.

My top sabotaging tendency is being restless! Yes, no wonder I meditate so much to keep grounded.

The good news is that sabotaging tendencies come from great traits and strengths that have been taken to an extreme and need channeling in order to work in our best interest.

It's the uber goal sought for nothing but itself...

Whilst every other goal we have in life (success, beauty, power, money, health, family...) is chased because it's meant to bring us... Happiness.

I guess this clearly tells us that happiness is not a "thing" connected to any external events or circumstances but the inner game we cultivate daily to receive & interpret those circumstances.
